Rent or Buy a Walk-Through Metal Detector in South Florida: The Real Math
Renting makes sense for a few events a year. Buying wins once screening becomes routine. Here is a simple way to run the numbers for your venue.
Walk-through metal detectors are a big purchase, so many organizations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach start by renting. That is often the right call, but not always. Here is how to decide.
When renting wins
- You screen for a handful of events per year (a gala, a graduation, High Holy Days, a concert)
- You want to test the process before committing a budget
- You have no secure place to store a gate between events
- You need extra lanes for one big day on top of equipment you already own
When buying wins
- Screening is weekly or daily: nightclubs, schools, houses of worship with regular services, courthouses
- You want the gate already calibrated and in place every time, with no delivery to schedule
- Your board or insurer now expects permanent screening
A simple break-even test
Add up what you would spend renting over the next 12 months: rental fees for every event, plus delivery and pickup. Compare that with the purchase price. If a year of rentals gets close to the price of a gate, buying is the better use of the money, and the gate keeps working for years after that.
What to ask any rental company
- Is delivery, setup and calibration included, or extra?
- How large is the deposit, and how is it returned?
- Do you include a handheld wand for secondary checks?
- Will you train my staff on site?
- Can rental fees be credited toward buying the unit later?
