How to Install 3M Paint Protection Film (PPF) on Your Car
3M paint protection film (PPF) is one of the easiest ways to protect your vehicle's paint from rock chips, scratches, and UV damage. With a little patience, you can install it yourself at home. Here's how.
What you'll need
- 3M Scotchgard PPF (pre-cut piece or roll)
- Spray bottle with a mix of water and a few drops of baby shampoo (slip solution)
- A squeegee or felt-edged applicator
- Microfiber towel and isopropyl alcohol
- A heat gun or hair dryer
Step 1: Clean the surface thoroughly
Wash and dry the area, then wipe it with isopropyl alcohol. Even a speck of dust will show under the film, so work in a shaded, clean space.
Step 2: Wet the surface and the film
Spray your slip solution generously on both the panel and the adhesive side of the film. This lets you slide the film into the perfect position before it sticks.
Step 3: Position and squeegee
Place the film, line it up, then use the squeegee from the center outward to push out water and air bubbles. Overlap each pass to avoid trapped bubbles.
Step 4: Heat and seal the edges
Gently warm the edges with a heat gun and press them down. Heat helps the film conform to curves and locks the edges in place.
Step 5: Let it cure
Avoid washing the vehicle for 48 hours so the adhesive can fully bond. Small water pockets will disappear as the film cures.
Why 3M?
