Car with gloss black chrome-delete window trim on a sunny Miami street

Chrome window trim looks dated on most modern cars, and paying a shop to black it out can cost more than you expect. With pre-cut 3M 2080 vinyl strips, it is a weekend project.

Gloss black

The closest match to factory "shadowline" trim on most cars. Gloss reflects light like paint, so it blends with gloss-black pillars and grilles. It is also the most forgiving to clean. If you are not sure, start here.

Matte black

A flat, aggressive look that pairs well with matte wheels or a stealth build. Matte shows fingerprints and wax residue more easily, so use cleaners made for matte finishes.

Satin black

The in-between option: a soft sheen that looks premium and modern without the mirror shine of gloss. Popular on luxury and EV trim.

Install tips that make the difference

  1. Clean twice. Wash, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol so no wax is left.
  2. Work in the shade. Hot Florida panels make vinyl overly soft and sticky.
  3. Leave a little extra to wrap around edges, then trim with a sharp blade.
  4. Use gentle heat on curves, then post-heat the edges so they stay put.
  5. Wait 24 hours before washing the car.

Why 3M 2080

2080 is a cast wrap film made for vehicles, with air-release adhesive that lets you reposition and squeegee out bubbles. That makes it far easier for a first-timer than cheap calendered vinyl.
